Progress on octagonal base

I never enjoyed making mortise and tenon joints. This thing has confirmed my previous opinion. Still have the spokes to make, mortise, and fit. It has been nice making something with fewer parts than a chest of drawers.

I am thinking that it would be good to have one stretcher go all the way from one side to the leg on the opposite side. You could still use that octagonal hub; just cut out the thickness of the stretcher and glue the remaining pieces onto the stretcher. It would add a lot of integrity to the frame. Depending on the top material, it might not matter much.
Just a thought.

It is only 18" high. With 8 legs it would be fine without any stretcher. It was a surprise what 8 legs did to rigidity compared to the 4 we normally have experience with.
