I think that the bag should be emptied at the half full point. More full than that can restrict air flow and possibly overheat the motor. How you determine that point is another question.

Mine is under the work bench and there is some effort in pulling the bench out to get to it, then getting it out from under the bench and then looking in the vac. Doesn't take much to put me off.

I am considering converting one of mine into a bag I can empty and reuse. My cheap gene is tweaking again. I was working on the one I just took out, but shook it so hard the connection port flew off. Considered gluing it back on, but....

Don't know how they would do it, but it would be nice if the vac had some sort of bag full indicator. I have looked into something like that for my DC but am a little skeptical. The other day I found the top filter bag about a third full.

I think the dust separators gained popularity for the reason you have just described.

Even a small 5 gallon bucket inline is easier to handle than some of the main bag and filter combos.
