OT- PayPal question

So being tech challenged I have question for those of you who are better equipped!

I can access PayPal from home but this week I tried from 2 other locations and I could not get on the site. Is there a Setting that I am not making use of?

I went there but I must be doing something wrong because I can't find anything that will allow me to change anything related to security.

Born & raised 8 mi from nearest town, youngest of 6 sons. We got electricity in 1947. Pa built wooden truck bodies. He bought an electric drill to use on those truck bodies. I was 8 yrol. My brothers drilled holes for side bodies, I'd put 1/4'' carriage bolts in those holes, bang'm with hammer, put washer & nut on other end, outside one ov'm tighten'm. Anything Pa or my brothers thought I could do, I did! So I kinda grew up learning about Yellow pine. Frame of truck had a hump up over rear axle housing. Paw used a ?foot adze? to cut out a ?notch? in 4x6 so the 4x6 laid flat on frame & it extended past end of metal frame and a little more. It was all bolted/held/holed/down to the trucks metal frame with metal from a blacksmith shop. It laid across top of 4x6 and two long bolts reaching bottom of truck frame where another piece from blacksmith, but somewhat shorter, metal frame down there was a little narrower, Paw had smith to cut the bottom pices shorter, also with the holes for those 2 long bolts from top to go thru, with flat & lock washer and square nut(tighten with adjustable wrench). Years went by, some brothers left home, I got older, could drill holes, more time went by, Paw got older, quit building bodies, I wuz glad ov that. I helped do wood working around the community. I tried contacting PayPal but that is a joke.

Does PayPal have your cell phone number?

They will send a text message with a code you have to enter confirming you are the account holder.

When you say different locations, do you mean that you are connecting via a wi-fi hotspot in say, a coffee shop? Most sane modern computers draw a sharp line between public and private connections and will curtail what you can do on the public. There are (unsafe) exceptions that can be made but you really need to understand that on the public connections anything that is communicated, account and credit card data for example, is potentially observable by others in the area.

I never do anything vaguely dangerous on public connections, preferring to use my cell data even if it might be a bit slower in some cases.

We have a couple Verizon MiFi jetpacks that generally are useful when travelling. Not always perfect, but far more private than using a motel wifi connection.

I’m a fairly spry 82-year-old who had been a reader/participant at WoodCentral since the demise of Badger Pond. I started visiting BP to learn something about finish for a project I’d completed and became hooked on internet forums as a way of increasing my knowledge about all sorts of topics. I have been a moderator for a couple other forums on subjects I enjoy. My interest in woodworking began in the early 1970’s when my wife and I had contractors add to our house near Traverse City, MI, and I ended up doing the trim work to reduce mounting costs. I had no tools. I bought a P-C skilsaw, hammer, screwdrivers and one of those wooden miter boxes with a backsaw. I made trim for windows and doors from one-by lumber and started my woodworking career. At the same time, I started a 50-year career as a ski instructor. I got onto the night shift at a mental hospital so I could ski days, and spent my 30s and 40s with that schedule. I eventually replaced the PC-upside-down-in-a-board with a real table saw and began the purchase of enough equipment to fill a jam-packed 40-foot shipping container we used after we sold our property in Michigan. The ski instructing had taken us to Colorado and we were spending too much on maintaining utilities for two homes. A couple years ago, the dozen years spent at 10,000 feet of elevation was making my body produce too many red blood cells, so we had to leave my “forever” home in the mountains and we moved back to Michigan. Now I have to find myself a shop space for all those tools in the container.

I think your nephew gave you good advice. I have a VPN account primarily because I use public/hotel WiFi quite a bit. Not all VPNs are created equal and I'm doubtful about free ones. The risk of using public network access supposedly decreased quite a bit once secure HTTP (https:) became common but a second layer doesn't hurt IMO. Mozilla is offering a VPN for Windows and Android. I don't use Windows but will probably switch to the Mozilla/Firefox VPN once when my annual subscription is up. 5 devices for $4.99/month no contract. The provider is a Swedish company with a pretty good reputation.
