I looked into one about ten years ago. I did not like the idea of recirculating through the cold side because when you turn on the cold you get whatever warm or hot water is in the line. What I really would have liked to have is one with a push button switch that would turn on the circulation for maybe five minutes, long enough to get the hot water to the sink and not waste water or much energy.

We just replaced our 22 year old tankless water heater with a better model. So far, so good. I do wish our plumber would get back here to finish the overflow line. I may have to remind him that he is not quite done.

Considering tankless myself in the next year or so.

Whatever you do, don't mount it in an attic. I worked insurance claims for 25 years and had a claim for water damage when the pipes froze and burst. Neither the homeowner nor the installing plumber gave any thought to the incoming and outgoing water lines that were exposed to attic air. The most common location in the new subdivision next to our home is on an exterior wall or the garage.

It's all about the pipe size. A faucet has a tiny supply line typically (1/4" - 3/8"), fed from a much larger diameter pipe (1/2" - 3/4"). So, even if a faucet is wide open, it's only flowing a fraction of what the main pipe can handle. For instance, a 1/4" supply line can only provide about 1/4 the flow available in a 1/2" pipe at a given pressure (1/4" diameter is 1/4 the cross-sectional area of a 1/2" diameter pipe). Adding the circulation pump could easily double or triple that flow in the main pipe, allowing the hot water to arrive at the faucet much more quickly.
