Our neighbor across the street has a cherry tree. We have two lemon trees, AND the orchard ladder. We're both happy to be neighbors, and my bride is currently ripening an entire bowl full of cherries from their tree.

Chuck, while I was picking the birds were right there with me. There were plenty left when I quit and saw some still today. More cherries this year than ever before.

Our pie cherries are still a couple weeks out. With the way everything else has been growing this spring, I had expected a good crop of cherries as well, but right now it looks like it will be a mediocre crop. It's been very dry here the last couple of weeks. I never got the top pruned out of this tree, so I figure the birds can have all they want up where I can't reach with the ladder, but they'd better leave all the low hanging fruit for my Father's Day pie.

Seems kind of early for this area but considering that we never had a Winter I guess it might be expected. No fruit trees here but I might go and check the farmer's market next Thursday to see what is showing up.

Where do you live to have cherries in May? I've got major cherry industry in my extended family in WI but the trees are just now blooming, fruit won't be until the fall. Jealous...

We live in East TN. Our cherries are all gone now.

These are not the Bing or other large commercial cherries. They are smaller and tart. I don’t know the name but they are common in this area.

The most popular pie or sour cherry variety is probably Montmorency.
