shop vac.

Went to the big box store HDepot to pick up a replacement for my 30 year old one. They had a lot of the rigid 12 gallon for $79 and another small stack of the $128 14 gallon vacs for the same $79.

These are the quiet type?

If so, you'll love them. I've been using a wd1450 version from hd for probably 13 years now. It's been great and no howling.

This one is not real loud. When I run it the cat don't run and hide.

Probably the quiet type

AT the time when I got mine, there were still a lot of standard noise shop vacs (I think in big ones, they're less common by a long shot now). A friend had one - craftsman. it was actually hard to tolerate running it at all -like you say, it made his cats run away (which is true). You can have a conversation while the noise reduced vacs are running and only have to speak up a little bit.
