Colleagues: I have an older USA-made Delta 14” band saw with an aftermarket Iturra tension spring. I do not use the saw much, and I completely released the spring tension after use. May need to do some ripping and possible re-sawing for a project and I thought about firing up the band saw with new blade. The current ½” blade is getting dull.

In the blade box, I found a several new ½” blades and a new ¾” blade. I have heard and read it is next to impossible to fully tension a ¾” blade on a 14” saw. Any truth to this? Thanks for any insight.

I never use a 3/4" blade on my 14" Grizz. for all the reasons that you hear.

1/2" 3 tpi or skip tooth would do all ya need.

Just my thoughts.

I would give it a try, it will probably work fine. I always resawn with 1/2 blades but you really have nothing to lose .

I also still have my older USA-made Delta 14" bandsaw but don't use it much now. When new I experimented with a lot of different blades. I have a tension gauge to set the tension.

I destroyed the stock tension bracket trying to properly tension a 3/4" blade - the bracket bent. Fortunately, Iturra Design carried a stronger bracket. That, his stronger spring, and aligning the saw made an excellent machine for resawing dry and cutting green up to 12" with a riser block. After my experiments with larger blades I stuck with 1/2".

Mine was a 14" Powermatic. It is tpi that is most critical not blade width. Too many teeth and gullets compact with dust and the blade looses set and wanders.

That's why I run anything bigger than 3 in. through the table saw with a thin kerf blade to reduce the amount the bandsaw has to cut to a minimum. That may not be resawing but I can get some fairly thin pieces with small amount of waste to be planed off. I usually try to tension my old Delta 14 in. made in 1947 according to the serial no. till the blade flutter stops with all the guides backed off with any width of blade.

Even though I have an 18" band saw I still use the 1/2 inch 4 TPI blade for resawing. Works great.

Since your tires are crowned and general recommendations are to adjust the tracking so that the gullets of the blade ride at the top of the crown (so that the saw cuts parallel to the miter slot), to use a 3/4" blade you would need wheels that are about 1-1/2 inches wide. You are not going to find those on most 14" bandsaws.
