X-19 check, I want to help a 15yr old boy going into 10 grade, that don't have a computer at home. Want to get'm one he'll have at home similar to what school has(chromeBook) is bout all I can find out about schools. Any & all advice HERE appreciated. Agree with Yonak. And the good news is that Chromebooks are every economical compared to other computers. $200-300 should get a nice one. Be sure to ask if you need to buy any special software for it.
Second the suggestion to check with the student's teacher. Schools may have a purchase agreement with a computer seller to get the computer with all the needed software already in place, and perhaps with discounted pricing if lucky.
If he doesn't have internet, he probably can't use it at home for school anyway. I agree with others that it's best to discuss it with his parents or teachers as to what he needs and can use.
You might need to figure out internet access for his schoolwork. Some providers will set up access for free in my area for kids that don't have internet and need it for school. You might check with a couple of the phone or cable providers in the area.
Side note: most of my nieces and nephews have our wifi password so that their phones can connect when they are visiting. Are you close enough that you could share your wifi password with him? Is there a next door neighbor that could share, assuming the signal would reach?
This is a generous thing you're doing. Yes, find out what the school recommends and if they have any deals. If you or someone is able to offer internet access, you might look into a guest account for him. I'll bet someone can explain how that works. It essentially limits guests to internet access only, no access to other users or data. It's set up on your router.
This very same situation is going on all over the USA.
All over the USA, schoolteachers are arranging internet hookups, so that every single one of their pupils is onboard. No child is being left behind. They make s plan for every pupil.
So. As others have said, you and the child’s parent/guardian need to talk with his teacher, or a school administrator. They will talk with you and recommend a specific plan for this student. Suggestion: Before buying anything, talk to the teacher or school. They likely have already made special arrangements with internet carriers in your area.
