As a pro, adding value to material is essential. So the cheaper the material the better. Would people use MDF over birch, if it the MDF cost twice what birch does?
While for me, it is easier to work birch; reassuring to know it is in my finished project; and the scraps left aver are actually valuable. Different value proposition.

I avoid HD MDF like the plague! At least in my HD, they clearly buy absolute low bidder stuff. For instance, in most of my applications the thickness is very important. I don't insist that 1/4 mdf always be 0.25 inches, but I need one sheet to be the same thickness as the next. No way Jose. Its subjective, but I think the actual density also varies enormously. I have even found some that wasn't even flat.
It was MDF that drove me to look for decent dust control options and for that I thank it profusely.
