Supposed to be worse with windchill tomorrow morning. A 70 degree swing if it hits the predicted 50 degrees on Sunday! 100 degree swing if you use windchill factors. Our 38 years old son was 3 years old the last time it was this cold.

Above freezing all day here, and that's at 9,000' elevation

Air's thin, so standing in the sun you think it's 60 or so, then you go over in the shade and realize its 37!

it's suppose to hit +25F tonight here, BUT next week they say it's going to be 70 degrees, yes that's +70 cannot believe it but will take it!!

I have to admit that at 72 years old, this extreme cold stretch has been a little scary.....there's always the chance that the electric will go out and the furnace with it.....or not having enough food to last thru the storm.

But, we are suppose to be on the down side now.....with warmer weather coming.

This morning, I saw a rainbow around the rising sun.....a lot of ice crystals in the air......very rare to see such a thing.

I spent one winter in Easton Maine, around 1979, it was about like that. Next three winters in Ashland, which was much nicer, lows would be around -20 instead of highs! Probably the difference was that particular winter rather than location, as those two places aren't that far apart. Easton was windier though.

I've gotten soft since I moved out here, I don't think I could go back to the kind of cold you guys face on a regular basis, let alone these polar vortex temps.

The south end of my barn has 7, 2 x 7' windows. I stepped in to check it out and found it was 55˚ inside, outside near Zero. All without a heater on. Warm enough to do some finish work.

Mine is similar, 96 square feet of window all facing south with a roof projection designed to shade in the summer and allow light in the winter. Shop usually gets into the 60's by early afternoon so long as the sun is shining. Cloudy winter days I have to run the woodstove, but that is kinda nice too.

Only downside is the UV - don't leave anything anodized there for a month, the sun tends to bake out the ink that provides color.

Dang! That's cold. I spent four years in North Dakota in the '80s and I remember how grateful I was to get my next assignment (sorry, Alan -- wonderful people in Grand Forks but oh, the weather!). We've had a cold spell here, but not like that.

When I was moved to the northern part of a cold state I was testing dairy cows when it was very cold. I remarked to the dairyman about the cold temperature he remarked about 4 years past the temperature was around 18 degrees for 3 months. I asked if he was milking cows in that weather and he said yes. I then asked what he was getting from the cows, ice cream?
