Vise question

R. D. Cook

I have picked up a workbench with a vise already attached but it is not one I've seen before. it seems rather awkward to me. It is on an older Sjoberg workbench. Not sure if the previous owner altered it or not, but this vise clamp seems odd. Trying to figure out how it was used. I guess I'm unfamiliar with how to add a picture on this site so I can't even add a pic here. If you are familiar with vises of different types perhaps you could send me your email address and I will send a pic. It appears to be just a wood screw with a swivel plate on the end which goes up against the face edge of the bench.

To post pictures, you need a profile. Creating a profile and posting pics is explained in the FAQs. There is a link to the FAQs in the grey box up in the header. If you create a profile, you will also be shown the e-mail addresses of the other members here who have profiles and have provided their e-mail addresses.

It sounds like your vise is missing its chop, if it is a face vise. Sjöbergs face vises also have two guide bars that keep the chop from rotating. If it is a shoulder vise, then a Google image search for "shoulder vise" should provide all the info you need to replace its chop.

Pictures and vise

If you have a way to put a picture up on the internet - either a Photobucket account that allows public posting (costs money) or a web site of your own where you host pictures (not sure here about Facebook pictures) - you can post a link to a photo from there by putting the web address (URL) in the "Optional Image URL" box at the bottom of the making-a-posting page.

To get full service, though, including multiple pictures, you really should consider creating a profile. See http://www.woodcentral.com/faq/#howuse for more information, and http://www.woodcentral.com/faq/profiles.html for how to create a profile. One really important note: you absolutely have to go into your computer's browser and clear Wood Central-related cookies; otherwise, the profile creation isn't possible.

As to the vise, I've seen pictures of Sjoberg benches with vises just like the one you describe. Is it a shoulder vise (see picture below, taken from the internet and using the "Optional Image URL" box)? If so, it should work fine, if the screw and swivel plate are OK.

It looks like that circular white ¿nylon? "chop" is all you get on that model. Just another typically underachieving Sjöbergs product.

Might be able to replace the white end with a more conventional piece of wood.

Since the white plate is already attached to the screw with a ball and socket joint, a more versatile wooden chop might be constructed by attaching the chop to the plate, either by screwing or bolting it directly to the plate, or by constructing a doughnut shaped split collar that would clamp the chop to the plate without modifying the plate.
