Right brain-left brain

or something like that. Home construction brain activity is compartmentalized and kept separate from furniture. Furniture hinge screws must have their bright brass slots all in alignment. House hinge screws must robustly hold the house together with no additional function or purpose expected.

So...

...would you put all that fine furniture in a pole barn and call that a house/home?

I see a house as just a larger piece of furniture, worthy of a consistent level craftsmanship. That's not to say that it needs to be at the same level as a Maloof chair, but I like to see attention to detail, even if it's to make said details fade into the background and not draw attention to themselves. Mis-matched screws in a hinge may as well be painted neon orange and pink in my eyes.

Thanks for all the advice ...

.. and a good laugh from Barry's story.

Jack, maybe the capenter purposely used finish nails to install the front door so he could come back at a later time and gain easy access ...

Bill, I also appreciate the strength of McFeely's screws, and I love using square drive screws.

Upon close examination the misalignment was closer to 1/4" so I was able to hog out the mortice with my B&D Wizard and also enlarge the opening in the strike plate.

Many a good outcome begins with a stop at Woodcentral!

Thanks again, everyone, and I wish you all a happy & prosperous 2014.
