DW788 Scroll Saw at Grizzly

Stephen Kirk

I'm in the market for a scroll saw and looking at the mid range saws. That pretty much boils down to the Delta, Dewalt and 16" Excalibur. The Dewalt always seems to come highly recommended.

I notice that the Dewalt goes normally around $550 for just the saw, but that Grizzly sells the saw, light and stand for $499. It sure looks the exact same, and is the same model number.

Does anyone know if the Grizzly is indeed the exact same saw, and not an older version or a cut down version made just for them?

I've owned or used several Grizzly tools that looked like copies of other tools. They aren't. The fit and finish isn't there. Some of their tools are pretty good, especially for the money but I'm almost positive they aren't rebranded tools. They are copies and apparently they cut corners here and there.

I have the Dewalt and love it. I had an older Delta industrial model that was a good saw but the Dewalt is better. I looked at the higher priced saws but Silas Kopf did a workshop at the Craft Center near where I live and he had them order Dewalt's for his class. I figured if it's good enough for him it's certainly good enough for me.

I saw some videos with Silas and saw the Dewalt there, which also made me lean towards it.

In this case at Grizzly, they aren't selling a Griz version, but the tool is listed as the DW788 and looks the exact same.

I also see Amazon selling it for $469, which is only slightly above Griz.

Does Amazon have the stand with it? You don't have to have the stand, but I do and love it.

If Grizzly sells a particular model of tool from another manufacturer it is that tool. They don't have special versions. I bought one of the deWalts (there) a few years ago, great scroll saw, very smooth, easy blade changes. Good that you are shopping around they are high (priced) on some stuff.

Leo,

I agree, on tools like that, Grizzly usually doesn't have the best price. It always pays to shop around, until you discover 3 more things you can't live without.

I was on the fence about getting the stand, and I got one with it, and have been real happy I did. The light you could probably do better, but I use mine (I had to buy it extra at the time) and it's ok.

It's a great saw.

I went ahead and ordered it. This time, Griz even beat Amazon. I've bought from Griz before and I'm comfortable with them. Even though I'm only 2 hours from a showroom, I had it shipped. Heck, it's $25 to ship, and I'd likely spend more on gas.

I'm looking forward to getting back into scrolling. It's what I started with as a kid. Now though, I want to get into marquetry. Considering what I used to scroll on, this will be a massive improvement.

I have been using blades from Mike'sworkshop for years. Big selection, good quality at reasonable prices.  Also no affiliation.
