>I'm new to wood lathe turning & I am learning a great deal from all the postings. I bought a inexpensive (read cheap) lathe. For now, the best hard wood I can get is wood skids (they are free) & then I glur them together to practice with.

my question is there some way to stain the wood very deep. the wood is about 3/8 inch thick. I would like to stain then glue, and then turn on lathe. the idea is to have various colors on bowl or vase. Is something that can be done or is it just a pipe dream? any thoughts about this will be appreciated. thanks

I don't know of any stain which will penetrate entirely through the wood. However, gluing up different varieties of wood should yield very pleasant contrasts in both color and texture. When you glue up your boards, make sure they are absolutely flat and clamped tightly together.

>you don;t just have to rely on pallet wood. Green wood can be used for turning and especially for practice while learning. Green wood is every where if you will train yourself to look for it. Storms produce many branches and parts which can be used for turning. Trees are taken out for building projects, roads,etc. Keep your eyes open and often the people taking down the trees will be happy to let you take some of the wood. Look to he left of this page under Message Boards and click on the TURNING link. That will take you to a forum dedicated to wood turners who will be happy to give you any nelp or advice you want.
