>Anyone out there tried selling their work at art shows? I realize there are fees and applications but how are the sales results? I would imagine most of the people are just looking but how many actually buy (on average) and how good are the shows for generating follow up business?

>LOML and I have done a good many in the north Texas area. We do mostly turnings and small boxes. There's not much market around here. Most of the time we made the entrance fee and very little over. Other vendors we talked to said much the same. We don't do them any more. Denton (Art, Antiques & Autos, Art & Jaz) is particularly bad.
If you can get into the Main Street Fort Worth, Grapefest or the Cottonwood in Richardson you might have better luck but they are looking for out of staters and the fees are close to $1000.

>If you can get into juried shows, which can be a tough process for someone just starting out, you can do quite well, according to friends who have made a living going that route. The more juried shows you qualify for, the easier it becomes to become a "regular". Unjuried shows don't attract as many buyers as lookers. We have friends who have done well with both woodworking items and artworks.

>LOML's Parents did the circuit for many years and did well. But they liked the travel. They sold paper towel holders, paper plate holders and cute signs etc. $5.00 - $20.00 items. I rode the horse for a season and did'nt do much. I peddle wooden models of a lot of things. Average cost $80.00 - $120.00. In the end the answer was that folks just crusing art & craft fairs don't have a $100.00 in their pocket. I'll be told to get a credit card mavchine but I don't need the heavy cost and hassel. That said rents for shows can go from $80.00 in an elementry school gym in Cowstop, TX to $300.00 - $500.00 in some of the larger Malls and "Shows". There are "promoters" that arrange the "tours" just find one and it leads to MANY others ! Just remember one thing . . .NO ONE thinks your work is worth what YOU think it is ! Go into this knowing, in your heart, you ain't gonna get rich, just make the rent. Otherwise you'll get your feelings hurt. Give it a shot ! You never know 'till 'ya try !
