>Hi,

Warning!! Newbie here!! This question may sound simple to seasoned turners out there, but here goes:

I am making Basic woodturning & woodcarving tools out of Steel & miscellaneous "found metal" rods & bars, with pre-turned wood for the handles.

The question is: How can I install or add the wood handles onto the metal so that they are properly secured to the metal & safe under high-speed turning.

I keep seeing tools with ferrules & rivets running through the tool handles. What are effective How-To methods for both styles of handle Design & Installation.

I also had a few ideas about something I call "Press-Fitting", which is basically Jamming those metal rods right into the handles under a high-pressure lever action 2x4 Jig-Thing. - Any Ideas?

Obviously, I'm on a budget, so any & all How-To or Home-Made suggestions is what I'm looking for. Any help or suggestions on doing this the Right or Safe Way would be very much appreciated. I wish I could afford to buy a nice set of tools, but this will have to do for now. Please Help!! Thanks.

You will definitely want to use ferrules because the handles will split if you don't. DAMHIKT.

Go do some searching on the Hand Tools side. If you don't find what you want, post the same question. There have been many posts on re-handling various tools and making handles for new tools. You are bound to get some help from the Neanders.

2. There have been many discussions of this topic on the Hand Tool side. That is where people build tools. Go to Archives section on left side of home page and search tool handles. Also search tool ferules. Many ideas to be had.

Brief summary_

1.drill hole the diameter of the width of the tool (assuming rectangular bar tool stock. Broach the tool into hole. Fill gap with epoxy and split dowels of hole diameter.

2. Drill undersized hole. Grab too in vice and heat tool very hot. Drive tool into hole. It will burn its way in, flames will shoot out, shop will fill with smoke. It is way cool and a favorite way among many. It is a lot of fun but I usually use the 1st procedure.

About 2-2 1/2" depth is fine for spindle tools, less for bench chisels..

3. Many of us make our own tools. Lathe tools are especially cheap to make as are chisels, etc.

>As others have said, you'll want a ferrule to prevent splitting. With a little luck and planning, you'll be able to find some tubing or pipe you can use for that purpose. You'll want the ferrule in place before putting the handle on the tool. If you use epoxy, you'll want to roughen the part of the shaft that goes into the handle so the epoxy will have some grab.

If you use epoxy or even just a very tight driven fit, you'll need to drill a very small weep hole through the outside of the handle into the main hole to be sure excess epoxy or even air can escape. Without that you can have hydraulic lock (maybe even with air) and not get the best seat.

I have also cut a small groove on one side of the hole. This works well with round section tools. If you have carving tools, use a small straight v-groove type tool. You could also use a small straight chisel and make to 2 cuts that intersect at about 45 degrees. You need to go all the way to the bottom of your hole so air/glue can escape.
