Planer sled - Works Great!

>Maybe I'm last guy to make one of these but I only recently acquired a planer. Followed Keith Rust's plans in FW #175 and the current video on their web site. It works great, after a short learning cure. Now, for only the cost of a used planer I have a 12.5" planer and 12.5" jointer, sort of. I realize the sled is not the same as having a 12" jointer with a 60" long cast iron bed, but it sure will serve most, if not all, my purpose of making something useful from a big stack of rough cut I recently came by for cheap. Are others of you happy with the planer sled solution?

>Hi Ells. Yes, I made one some time ago and was happy with the results. I used it to plane some walnut wider than my jointer. I haven't had to use it for a while. I recently looked at it and noticed it has warped a little.

>Ells,

Made one too and it works as described. The only modification I made was to insert a couple of dowels (adjustable up and down) into the sled on the trailing edge to stop the board from creeping backwards. I guess in my mind I had visions of the board shooting backwards when planed. Glad the sled has worked for you.

>Jim,

Actually, my first board crept forward at because it was flat enough that several of the wedges weren't lifting so the cross pieces set directly on the sled. I added the no-slip material do the bottom side of the cross pieces, as well as on top, which took care of it. That's the only mod I made but have not yet added the laminate to the bottom side. Don't see the need for the laminate yet, although would help address the forward creep if it re-occurs.

>It's amazing! I made it a little less than a year ago and it works wonderfully. It's great to be able to flatten really wide boards. My jointer is only 8". I recommend it to anyone.
