Drill Press supply wall cabinet

David Hay @ Denver

>On my todo list of shop projects is a wall mounted cabinet that would hold all of my drilling accessories. I'd mount this next to my drill press for easy access to drill bits, chuck key, sanding drums, etc. I've come across many plans for cabinets that wrap around the base of the drill press, but since the outfeed of my planer and jointer go under my drill press table, that particular idea won't work in my shop.

Has anyone built or seen a wall cabinet for drill press supplies? Any thoughts on things I should think about when I design such a thing?

Thanks!

David

>Hi David,

There is a pretty simple one that sounds like what you are looking for in Shopnotes Vol 14 Issue 84.

>Good Afternoon David,

I've divided that function based upon frequency of use. Im lieu of a cabinet, I made several bit indexes/caddys which mount on the wall behind the drill press. These keep 135 degree and brad points, plug and tenon cutters, and forstners within quick and easy reach. For my other accessories such as sanding drums and sleeves, hole cutters, ball rasps, and Safe-T-Plane I built a little finger jointed tool box which sits on a shelf close to the drill press. A simple drawer with partitions, slung below an up-graded drill press table would be even more convenient.

>Something shallow about the size of a medicine chest I would think. The shelves would take a drill index crosswse and the door could have storage for table clamps etc. Not too big or it will turn into a catch-all.

>Place all the drill press supplies that you wish to store in the cabinet on your workbench and arrange them roughly the way you would like them stored. From this you can establish the overall size of the cabinet, the shelf dimensions and hang-up area. Don't forget to allow space for those tools you will get later.
