OT-- IE 7 Again

>START > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Internet Explore > Remove

THe trick is finding it, it's WAY down at the bottom of the list... most people look udner the I's for Internet Explorer or the M's for Microsoft Internet Explorer and don't down down to the W's.

Takes about 60 seconds to uninstall and it uninstalls nicely. FYI - alot of the older HP photo software has problems with IE7, in fact most software that has problems with IE7 are older version and the compniaes are trying to get you to upgrade to the newer versions of their software. IT took an month or two for QUickBooks to release a fix for their software.

>When you install IE7, it doesn't remove IE6, just makes it inactive... presumably because they knew that tons of software may have problems talking to the internet with IE7.

>I just helped a friend with his older HP computer running the original XP release with only 256mb RAM. Automatic Windows Update tried to install IE7 for him and thoroughly screwed up the machine. IE wouldn't start, everything was really slow, Norton Antivirus kept insisting that NAV be deleted and reinstalled. Trying to go back to a prior restoration point didn't help. I did a non destructive Windows XP recovery from the recovery area on the HD and then updated the system to Win XP SP2 (I replaced the 256mb RAM with 512mb before I did that). I specifically told the update NOT to install IE7 and not to try it again. I also turned off Automatic Windows Update and told him that when he does a manual Windows Update to be sure to uncheck any attempts to install IE7. I installed Firefox 2.0 and suggested that he use it rather than IE. His current subscription to NAV was about to run out so I replaced it with Kaspersky AV. Everything works a lot better now but you can be that I am not going to install IE7 on any of my computers.

>You're right.... I have not tried uninstalling IE7 on a new PC yet. Haven't had a need. Only had to on older PC's that have older software that is incompatible with IE7. Most new software is compatible, it's only software that is a little older, that presumably wouldn't be on your new laptop to begin with.

>Don't quote me on this... I'm not entirely sure. But IE6 was "built-into" WindowsXP..... that was part of the whole lawsuit, it's the OS not a browser. IE7 installs like an application.

So just like Adobe, or QuickBooks or many other pieces of software, when you install one version it doesn't undo the original, it just places the second version along side and makes it the default version of that particular program, but the original is often still there. Not all software works liek that but alot does. Of course to negate what I've just said they're just as much software that overwrites the previous version when you install a new version.

But as far as IE7 goes, IF it lets you uninstall, then it's smart enough to have something else (IE6) waiting in it's place. Can't prvoe it, but it's an educated guess. But Vista???? I need to do some homework on this particular question.

Man, things change too quickly :)

Everything works apart from last year's tax program on 1 machine but that's just part of upgrade life. As far as being different, well, I thought it looked the same apart from some minor things and the tabs - a bit handy but nothing as thrilling as I thought they would be.
