>have you tried to sharpen it to see if it lost it's temper? Black sounds more like a carbon thing if it were blue then it would be a temper thing. could some one have been using it to hold somthing why they heated it and not even messed with the temper?

>It is doubtful that the hardness has been affected back 1/8". Just because the surface has been overheated (or maybe not as Ernie suggested) it does not necessarily mean the interior was as hot. Sharpen and give it a try.
