router bit slippage

>I am using a Delta 43-355 shaper with a router bit adaptor. I am having trouble with the bits slipping or rising during the feed through of stock. I have replaced the collet and I'm still having problems with the bits creeping up. Any suggestions on how to cure the problem?

>Jim, If you don't leave some space under the end of the bit, in the bottom of the collet, as the collet moves down it will feel tight prematurely before it actually gets as tight as it needs to.
When you change out your shaper spindle, there is a key on the bottom of the shaft that needs to index. Make sure it isn't down there.

>Does it happen with all bits? I had the same problem with a Bosch 1617evs and a dovetail bit. Drove me nuts, tried several collets, Bosch had no answers. Finally tried a PC router with the same bits and it worked fine.

>I don't know the specific details of the Delta router bit adapter, but the general answer for any collet-type devise is to make sure the taper surfaces are clean and free from pitting. If they are not slick and smooth, the adapter cannot be pulled into the taper as far and won't provide as much inward clamping power.
