Plans for Nutcracker Soldier?

>I'm looking for plans, or anyone with experience, for those nutcracker soldiers. Mainly for how to cut the area where the handle/cracker goes through the body. I have one sitting in front of me and can't really figure it out without thinking that I must need a specialized jig or something. The turning of the parts is easy.

>Rather than subtracting the wood, what if it were never there? Might be a good idea to stick a spacer block in while turning to smooth out the cut, and pop it out when you're done.

One member of the boards also scanned and emailed me an article about them from one of his books...Thanks Verne!
I may be making these in production runs for a fellow here in VT who wants to sell them next xmas season.
