Ladder Back Rocker restoration

>I recently received an antique ladder back rocking chair,likely belonging to my Great Grand parents or earlier. It's primitive, made of different species,repaired with little nails here and there,and obviously hand-made judging by the "whittled" rungs and slightly different turned posts. It is missing the woven seat and both rockers. Rather then guessing at the rocker size and wasting a couple of maple boards,I wondered if there was any rule of thumb or tips for determining the right size of rocker so the chair operatates properly given its size? Any tips appreciated.
