>I recently bought a Shaker rocker with a shawl bar. It needs a little work. I could use some ideas.

The shawl bar has been broken off. The bar is in good shape and still retains the nibs that were part of the back rest posts, the break being at the point where the posts were necked down to fit into the bar. I would like to restore the bar with out using screws. Any ideas?

One of the rockers has been replaced with a different type of wood. The obvious solution is to go out and find a proper replacement piece. I have no local vender to turn to. Any suggestions on mail order or web site venders that deal with small quantities of specialty woods?

>I am not a professional so take this for what its worth. I recently restored an old Kitchen chair for my sister. The chair has no large monetary value, but has been in her husbands family for several generations. One of the rungs and one back rest post had broken off at the turndown similar to yours. I drilled the posts carefully and glued in an oak dowel. I built up the other loose rungs with plane shavings - wrapped around the undersized rungs / posts. I cleaned out all the old glue first. All the glue I used was hot hide glue, I must have removed 3 or 4 different types of glue, several screws and nails from previous attempted repairs. The chair had several different paint coats over the original finish. I removed all the old finish, sanded lightly (didn't attempt to remove the years of dings and character)and finished the chair with several coats of wipe on orange shellac. IMHO, It ended up looking pretty good - my sister was ecstatic. Course now she has some more she wants me to redo.

>If it is the same shape as the other rocker but just a different wood, I would try to match the finish so it isn't noticeable. If the substitute rocker is a different shape or length then you can probably order a new set from Van Dykes on line store.
