>The guide Bearing on the bottom of me Dleta 14" bandsaw has started to sieze up. Its the standard bearing that came with the saw. Has anyone replaced theirs? I know I can buy one from Iturra, if I could find my catalog, but can't I get one from a local bearing shop? What do I need to know? Can I up grade to something better, a better sealed bearing, not Carter guides?

>You can buy them from Grainger, MSC, or the like, for a third of the price. All you need is the ID and the OD and the width. They're all made overseas and they're all pretty much the same as far as I can tell. Expect to pay about $5. They shouldn't ever wear out. If you put any load on them at the speed a band saw runs they won't last long so make sure you keep them spaced far enough apart that you can slide a piece of paper between the rollers and the blade. I leave 1/16" on both sides. That pine you're cutting probably built up on the rollers and you lost all your gap. If you keep spraying the blade with Pam while it's running it won't stick as much. Be sure to get the double-sealed radial ball bearings.:-)
>One, I did not saw the pine on the bandsaw. I did not want to set up the necessary in feed and out feed rollers. I sawed the pine on the table saw and used a WWII blade. I am impressed. I figured by the time I ripped it on the bandsaw and clean up the faces, I would have lost The width of the tablesaw blade. The beams were six inches square and by cutting from both sides, it did a good job. Quarter sawed those old devils and its really nice lumber.
My other foolishness is that my son walked into the shop with a huge bar of hand made soap. He had tried cutting it with a knife and it crumbled. So I FOOLISHLY took it from him and turned to the bandsaw. Boy is that stuff gummy. I had to pretty much completely disassemble the saw. Washed the blade and the wheels. Two or three times. Took the guide assemblies apart and washed them too. Then cleaned everything with WD 40. This is when I discovered the bottom thrust bearing has seized. I got it cleaned up and freed and turned the scarred side away from the blade.
Let me save you a lot of trouble. Never cut homemade soap on your bandsaw.
>Some bearings used for bandsaw guides are also commonly used in the wheels on roller blades. I picked up a used pair of used roller blades to use the wheels for a lathe steadyrest and it turned the bearings fit my Grizzly 0555. Google the number on your bearings and see what turns up.
Now I have a stash of 14 bearings left that only cost me $5!
>I assume you are talking about the thrust bearings. I just replaced both of them on my older delta bandsaw. I think the bearings that were on it were probably the original ones, from the 40s. I took one off and got the numbers off it and my local NAPA store was able to cross them. They got two of them for me, they were not particularly cheap, about $15 each which I thought was kind of high for the size of bearing but there must be something unusual about the size of them or something. I kind of had to scratch my head a little bit until I figured out how to get the bottem bearing off but once I figured it out it went smoothly. Jared
>Bearings, for the most part, conform to international standards for physical dimension and types. Generally the part# is stamped onto the dust cover of the race, or etched into the outside of the bearing surface.
The part # on the bearing usually contains the physical dimensions and type as part of the part #.
Take the bearing to a local bearing distributors and you should be able to get one, in fact get a few. They are very common and cheap.
