Sanding Heart pine question?

Barry Irby

>I posted about cutting/resawing heart pine and that has gone well. Now I'm thinking about sanding it. Is there anything you can do to reduce the gumming and clogging of the sand paper. I'm thinking of the Performax in particular, but also my ROS. Is there a release agent or sterate or something that would extend the life?

I've got the rubber cleaner sticks, but I was hoping for something preventative.

>Hey Barry,

I think someone makes a mesh/screen type sandpaper. I haven't tried it yet. I haven't worked heart pine in a while but I was going to look into the screen stuff before I went straight to the paper. Your best bet may be to try scrapers and or planes in lieu of sandpaper.

>Note: never have done this. Since heart-pine is full of pitch, if you are going to be hand sanding I would think you could put some mineral sprits on the wood might reduce the "gum" from forming gunk or corns on your sandpaper. MS should not harm the finishing process if you let the project dry. Let us know what works for you.

>FWIW I have had success scraping heart-pine, in spite of the generally held opinion that soft woods are not suitable for that process.

>Klingspor's zirconia discs actually work better than their sterate stuff, in my opinion. Half of my floor finishing business is antique heart pine. My sandpaper suppliers love me. Heat is the enemy. If you can keep it cool, it won't gum as bad.

>For sanding belts I've had good results cleaning pine resin by soaking in mineral spirits, brushing pitch off, and then drying. Not preventive but sure extends mileage you get out of a belt.

>I have also experienced the gumming problem with sanding heart pine lumber, and its not pretty. Fine Homebuilding Magazine had an article on building cabinets out of heart pine, and also addressed the gumming problem. Can't remember their remedy or the issue. I am going to visit the Taunton site and look it up for myself.

Give it a try.
