I received a new magnetic switch from Grizzly today to install in my Powermatic 63 contractor's saw. The problem is that it came with not a single word of instruction. The other problem is that I am no electrician by any stretch. Is there any sort of instructions or diagrams that anyone knows of to help me with this? If not, my father is pretty knowledgeable about these things and I could get him to help me in the next few weeks.

The switch is single phase, 110volt, 2HP. The table saw is single phase, 110volt, less than 2HP. Is installing this switch a simple task or is it complicated? I opened up the cover and couldn't make heads or tails of anything!

First, let me ask. Did you check the inside of the cover? Sometime there is a diagram there. If not, can you take a good photograph and post it here?

If not, you probably should wait for help, or see if you can find a good electrician.

I have a magnetic switch manufactured by Taian, which I think is the same that Grizzly sells. Mine has a label inside the cover with a wiring diagram. All of the terminals should be identified with letters and numbers. Some terminals will already have wires attached; leave these where they are.

The following assumes that you have 3 wires (black, white, green) from the power cord and 3 wires (also black, white, green) from to the motor.

The 2 green wires both go to the ground terminal inside the box.

From the power cord, the wires attach to the contactor at the top of the box. Black wire goes to 1(L1), white wire goes to 5(L3).

From the motor, the wires attach to the thermal overload at the bottom of the box. Black wire goes to 2(T1), white wire goes to 4(T2).

That should do it, but if the wire colors or terminal designations don't match, or any of this doesn't make sense, better call for professional assistance.

>A good answer from Kent if the terminal numbers all match up. If not, get help from an industrial electrician. As a last resort, post pictures here. Whatever else you do, keepp it unplugged until you're finished. Then plug it in at some distance from the switch, and stop and start it the first couple times with a dowel or stick.

Yeah, I know, probably a bit paranoid, but still....

Thanks so much for your information. Kent, your post was very helpful. Unfortunately, I still have too much confusion about the whole thing. I'm getting some electrical work done in the house soon, so I'll just ask the electrician to help me with this switch. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your help!
