OT: Car Radios

Robert Hutchins

>With apologies for going OT . . .

The original radio/tape player in my '90 F150 no longer displays the station frequency, band, and time; but continues to play well. I took the unit out of the dash hoping that I'd find an in-line fuse that might be the problem. No luck. I'm thinking that there is probably a little display module inside that went bad, but I'm the kind of electronics repairman that uses a 10 pound sledge hammer.

So . . . . I need some advice on what to buy to replace the old one. My hearing has lost the highs; so I no longer pretend to be an audiophile (besides, who ever saw an audiophile trying to get decent sound in a 18 yo noisy pu?). I'm not gonna replace the OEM speakers, nor pump up the bass. I'd like to get a reasonably priced aftermarket AM/FM CD player that doesn't take an advanced degree in computers (or a teenager) to learn to use. What's too cheap to bother with? What should I be looking for? How much is it gonna take out the social security check?

>Robert,

Funny you should ask! Nothing wrong with the cassette type AM-FM radio I had in my P/U, but wanted a good but reasonably priced CD player. Last weekend I bought a Kenwood MP2035. It's real easy to use, sounds great, and at $200, was, I feel, a good buy with good quality. My stock speakers in my '95 GMC have never sounded so good. I think it was money well spent!

>Hi Robert,

You can do an extensive search to save a few bucks on the car stereo.

But if you want a package that comes with everything you need, and that is easy to install, go to Crutchfield website and pick one to your liking.

>According to my son, going to the Ford Cert. training program. Josh, said " the LCD thingy has gone out. Fix: Take radio to a radio repair shop, get another after market radio or pay Ford $800 for a factory job. Both of my Ford radio LCD thingys are out, I've just got the stations memorized and wear a wrist watch. Make sure the dome light works for night time watch viewing, : ' >.

Maybe DanD. will chime in on this question, Ford radios, etc. is his thing, I think?

>Directions, install kit, harnesses, shipping all included. Their prices are about the cheapest you'll find too. Their service is awesome, including tech support and customer service. You may not be into it, but their Kenwood cd/mp3 player with a usb port for $129 is about the slickest thing since.....

Check Fuse in fuse box

Dustmaker Mike

>look for a fuse in the fuse box that might be out. Does it still hold the presets or does it lose them? If it looses the presets and the clock check the yellow cable (I think is the correct color) to see if there is 12 volts there with the switch off. If it is there then it is a radio problem if not then it is a wire harness problem.

Now with all that said I went looking for a radio and it took me awhile to find one I liked. I wanted one with the tuner controls sort of like the old dial types on the right and the volume on the left. I went to Walmart, Best Buy and Circuit City and played with them until I found a style I liked. After that you will need an adapter kit to connect to te factory harness and a faceplate to hold it in place.

Try eBay!

Dave Herman, West Chester, PA

>Look for one on eBay. I got a factory Ford AM/FM Cassette CD player for my 2000 F-150 for $55.00. Pulled the old one out in 5 minutes and connected the plugs and had the new one back in in another 5 minutes.

Thank You, All!

Robert Hutchins

>Went to Crutchfield, looked at the Kenwood CD/MP3 USB package and bought it. $129 inclusive of shipping, wiring harness for my model and installation instructions seems like quite a deal. Might try to find an LCD module for the old unit too. Who knows? I might even learn something about electronics repair!

Thanks again for the help.

>I would have said to try one of two things, Go to a junk yard or upgrade to satellite radio.

I had a van and the radio went out two thousand miles after the warranty ran out. Went to a local junk yard (auto recycler?) and bought a nearly identical replacement for $35. The guy behind the counter came out and showed my how to pull the "bezel" or whatever the surround is called and I had the old one out and new one in, nothing flat. Since it was a direct trade, nothing to decipher.

If I were getting a new radio, I would up grade to satellite. I have a Serious Unit (plugged into the power port (cigarette lighter) and I like it. Lots of options to choose from for listening.

Will Let You Know, Scott

>But it might be a coupla weeks. I'm having surgery on my knee on Friday. If the radio doesn't get here before late Thursday afternoon, it won't be installed as I'll be out of commission for at least a week.

Sort of Agree with Barry

>Good Afternoon Bob

I have been toying with the idea of replacing the AM/FM/tape deck in my '93 Mazda pickup for a few months. My problem is that I only drive it 1500-2,000 miles every year. I have an XM in the shop and love it, especially since commercial radio is so lousey up here in the Phila area. Of course the trade off is a monthly cost for satillite radio vs free commercials and awful programming for the other. I ofter use the ultimate option: turning the damn thing off. Maybe I don't need another radio in the pickup after all.

I use my XM in both

Dustmaker Mike

>the shop and my cars. I just found a car kit on E-bay pretty cheap and the house kit from Wally World on clearance for $20.00 so I bought it. Now I just carry the reciver between the places and listen to Sat Radio.
