David Marks and tung oil

>Seems to me that David Marks uses tung oil as the preferred finish on most of his projects. Just curious if my "thoughts" are accurate.

1. Tung oil is a good finish for the appearance wood.

2. Tung oil is not good as a protection for the wood (scratches and such).

So....Saturday he built a tool box....and....he finished with tung oil. Wouldn't a tool box be better served with poly to protect against the abuse I would think it would take? That is....if you really used it as a tool box and not as a "display" piece.

As always...TIA

I Think That Depends, Terry

>Good Morning Terry,

I saw shows where Dave used tung oil finish on a beauitiful tool box made of Pruvian walnut and curly maple, and another tool cabinet of cherry and koa. Myself? I'd use poly, but my tool boxes and cabinets are of pine and/or oak/plywood. My shop is more utilitarian, and high end cabinets and tool boxes would be out of place. If I had to show-case my workmanship and design/construction expertise, I'd use the high end lumber that Dave uses, and I'd use a beautiful finish like tung oil. Too bad I don't have a TV show. But I can and do use tung oilon some projects, and its fairly tough when mixed with poly, as some of the commercial tung oils are.

>Maybe David is using tung oil because it's what he's familiar with. On the other hand, a toolbox that gets used is going to get damaged. It's a matter of "when", not "if". From what I hear, poly is difficult or impossible to repair. Which might argue for using a more repairable finish...

>Hi Terry.

David used a finish containing Tung oil in his early shows. The manufacturer has "updated" the finish and it no longer contains Tung oil.

>Shooters like Tung Oil as a finish for their rifles. When multiple coats are hand rubbed, it forms a reasonably durable finish that seals the wood well from the affects of moisture. The more coats you put on, the deeper the look of the finish. I'm not sure about it's repairability though.
