Itty Bitty Belt Sander...Itty Bitty Review

>Recently I bought the new Porter Cable 371K Compact Belt sander. Cost about $119.00. It's a 2 1/2" X 14" belt sander with a contoured rubber top that allows you to handle it one handed. There is a front handle for two handed operation as well. Single speed motor.

Generally I like this tool. It is handy for smoothing curves and working on small panels etc. The larger belt sanders can be cumbersome for some tasks and this little guy comes in handy in those cases.

One downside is that the belt size is not a common size so stock up on belts from the source where you get the sander. FYI

This is by no means a recommended sander as a primary belt sander. The bigger guys still do a better job, especially on large surfaces. But if you are looking for a handy tool for smaller belt sanding tasks I can recommend this tool. And be careful, it might be small but it can still remove a lot of material in a hurry if you are not careful!

>Thanks for the review Tom. Before this product came to market I had several times where I wished there was such a product...a belt sander that is "easy" to control for certain applications. It's good to hear that you like it. It may be in my shop in the future.

>Sue, No problem. It's still not a light weight. But takes less brute force to control than its larger siblings. Like any belt sander, there will be moments when it can get grabby. That's when using a second hand helps. But I have used mine a few times now and no regrets.

>Thanks for the reccomendation. I've been wishing for a small belt sander ever since Skil stopped making their 2 1/2" x 16" one hander 15 years ago.

>Hey Thomas, That is a handy looking little unit, I wish I had know about it when I bought my last little sander. I bought a little Ryobi for some curved stair parts.

Since you mentioned getting it for some curved parts. Since any size sander will do the outside / convex side, so I am guessing it is mainly for the concave side that you needed it for most.

I was just wondering if you did anything to even improve on the small size for inside work? I sometime cut a small chord sub-platen that I will slip in under the cork of the tool-platen to give an curved shape to the tool platen. By doing this, you get away from riding on the rollers on each end, and get a good feel for whenever you are crossing a bump or a dip, and can get a fairer inside curve than what you would get with a flat platen.

I don't know if this is a well known trick or not. I have been using it for quiet a while, and don't recall if it was something that I read, or came up with on my own. Let me know if I am not making it clear to understand. K

>I might also add that the dust collection on this little beast works quite well. I've used mine a few times and the dust collection works as well as that on my ROS.....

As to the "odd sized" belts, Eagle America has different grits from 80 to 220 (I think) in packages of 5, plus an "assortment" pack of 5 different grits (one each).

All in all, I would easily recommend this little sander....

>Keith, this sander will handle inside work to a degree...obviously the radius size is the issue. I haven't tried your method but it sounds interesting.
