New clock finished

Jack Guzman from Maine

>I finally finished a type 2 regulator clock I've been building.

A friend asked me to build a case for an antique movement he had. When I finished the clock I liked it so much I had to have one myself. So I bought a new reproduction movement and a dial and proceeded to build my own clock.

The clock is solid Black Walnut except for the back, which is pine. The movement and accessories are from Merritt's Antiques.

It took a little fiddling to get the clock "in beat"(a new process to me)but it now runs fine and LOML is tickled to have such a pretty clock in the house.

Criticism is welcome. This is a beginning to me. I plan on building more clocks. I like the process.

thanks for looking---Jack

>Hello Jack,

Very nice job. I love the round face, and the choice of woods. I visited Merrit's Antiques when I was completing my wife's Grandmother clock. They have a very interesting clock museum with a jillion clocks of all types displayed. Well worth the trip, only an hour or so for me.

Time to hang out a new shingle!

>That is a beautiful clock, Jack. You could start a new business and have buyers waiting in line, I'll bet. The walnut looks wonderful. I have some mantle clocks for relatives on my 'to build' list. Hope they come out nearly as nice.

>A good job on the clock. I built a number of clocks a few years ago. I took a mantle design and used it to build clocks for each of my four children over a four year period. The design was the same for each, I just varied the wood in the four clocks. I have the works here for two more clocks that I haven't got around to building. The movements were purchased from Mason and Sullivan and they have been out of business for many years now.

>Hello Jack,

Very nice clock! I like the color of stain and round face as well. A nice change from the standard look.

The only thing that would be nice is to see more of the brass weight. Maybe it's just that time of day when the weight goes up behind the face.

I also like the classic look of the clock face, numbers, dials, etc.

My wife wants a clock like this very much and she's commenting on your work as she looks over my shoulder right now. She likes it as well. Teresa says hello, "Hello."

Did you build from plans or was your project from the old noggin?

>Thanks Ray and hello Theresa. The weight is cranked up to the top, just under the movement, with a key.It takes about eight days for it to drop all the way down to the bottom of the case. So when you see the whole weight,it's time to rewind the clock.

I have a book of Seth Thomas clocks that I got a picture from and scaled off it to create what I hope is a close replica of an original. These clocks were made from the late 1800s til about 1960.I also looked at clocks in museums and pictures from ebay auctions of antiques. No plans. However, just before I finished I found a book with a plan in it. Mine was pretty close. The things I did different I wouldn't change.I think my plan is an improvement.---Jack

>Excellent work on this beautiful clock! How did you join the segments of the round frame? I've thought of doing something similar but have two ideas: 1) join the segments with splines or 2) laminate several layers of these segments so that they are staggered over each other. Then route the circle. Please let me know if I'm even close.

Thanks and, again, beautiful work!

>Actually I did both. I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy.I splined together a base of plain walnut segments and overlayed a top layer of figured walnut, staggering the joints.I would have just splined it but I wanted figured wood on top and I didn't have enough for full thickness.thanks---Jack

>Jack-excellent work on the clock. I did some repair work a clock of the same style. I'd love to be able to replace the dial- Can you tell me where you obtained that dial for the clock you made?

Thanks,

>Jack, and one that even I can see from across the room! 8-). Love the dial face and bezel - they go well together. I've made one pendulum clock and really enjoyed the process. Learning a little about clock movements and setting the "beat" kept me intrigued enough to want to do another. Thanks for posting and looking forward to your next clock.

Ray, I Tend to Agree with Jack

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>about plans. I've built two clocks now from rough cut lumber and plans. The plans were useful in establishing rough dimensions, and giving a hint of molding profiles and contours. Of course, some designs come in kits which supply(for an arm and a leg) all the necessary wood precut and finished to size. My druthers compell me to fabricate my own parts. I like to see a picture and then "reverse engineer" my project to completion.

>hanging in my father's front room. Made of white oak, it's a handsome thing. But even with the expert hands of a really good clock maker, it doesn't want to keep really good time anymore.

It was a gift to my mother, back in the 1950's, from a friend, and how old it was then, they really didn't know. But our guess is that it's at least 75 years, probably more.

Jack, yours is really beautiful. Inspiringes me to consider making another from the stash of Claro walnut out in the racks right now. Well, maybe after I finish the kitchen at my daughter-in-law's place.
