OT RANT: why is 99% of technical support idiocy!

>Case in point I need to change ONLY the city in my paypal, everything else is the same.

Paypal will not allow you to change just the city, you have to add another address, make it home, delete the old one and then go through verification again.

WELL, that's dandy, but if the street address is the same, like when they change the name of your city, then PAYPAL won't let you add that new address because it already exists!

An email to paypal gives me 28 steps to change it, which of course is exactly what I just tried so that is why I emailed them!

>I had a similar experience. My post office moved into a much nicer newer larger facility about a block closer to where I live. The old post office only had room at the counter for three clerks.

My P0 Box used to be "K". Now it has a number. Mind you, I did not move, they did. I had to notify everyone of MY "Change of Address" at my expense. It takes years. Some people, notably Banks cling to your address as if it were a birth certificate. Now I get mail marked as "undeliverable" because after about eight years an occasional piece still shows up with PO Box K. Oddly, the way I get it is they put a notice in y new numbered box and make me come to the counter to get it. A PITA if I went to the Post Office at night or on the week end. Happily, the mail that drags slowly through the system is something like I failed to renew my passport or to take advantage of a timely stock offering. Who needs a passport or a good deal on stock anyway?

Its a wonderful new post office though and I am sure they are happy with their huge new digs. I now has three clerks, just like before, but their work stations are really nice. Much better than my work station, but then, I am paying for both.

To err is human; to really foul up requires computers! You are the victim of a lazy programmer or a cheapskate programming manager, or both.

>For some reason, Yahoo has decided that my cell phone number is one of their technical support numbers. I get three or four calls a week from people that are already frustrated. I have to admit I usually tell the caller that the idiots at Yahoo have made a mistake, and sometimes ask them why they would do business with a company that doesn't even know their own phone number. I've even gotten some pretty unplesant voice mails from Yahoo customers at the end of their patience when I didn't bother to answer.

Luckily, my phone service plan includes unlimited incoming calls, so it doesn't cost me anything. I've tried to straighten Yahoo out, but that proved to be an exercise in futility, and I can't change the number because it is a work number, and I'd have to notify something like 1700 people, and most of them wouldn't note the change, anyway.

>Yahoo has plenty of money. You should sue them. Maybe that would get their attention. :-)

>First place I lived down in Alabama, the phone number was one digit off from a local popular dance bar. We loved those 2AM phone calls from the drunks looking for the lost love hanging out at the dance bar.

>The City gave me a new address. Something about 911 but the post office wants the old address. All other deliveries want the new address. I believe I have three house numbers now and I don't know where I live.

I have a similar problem with both Amazon and

>Ebay. Their programmers are evidently products of the public schools since the 60's. Amazon doesn't know the difference between a second address and a new address. Ebay has a system where all you can do is take an intuitive guess and you are most likely be wrong and have things shipped to a no longer used address. Seems like the bigger a company gets the less able they are to make anything understandable without a week's study.

>The wonders of finding someone never cease; my cousin and her husband have lived in the same house for at least 35 years. A couple, three years ago, the brilliant minds had the idea of making homes easy to find out here in the boonies, so they named all the roads and provided road numbers. Recently, I sent Jim and Sandra a Christmas card, without the house number, but with the road name. The road is 1-1/2 miles long, at most, and has five or six houses on it. The card came back as undeliverable because there was no such person on the road. As regulations now require, their name is on the mailbox in letters at least 2" high.

>I've had great luck with Dell products, but a few years ago, my new box was on warranty and the CD burner died. Hours on the phone with a guy I could barely understand for the sing-song accent.

Finally, in frustration, he told me to format my hard drive and he'd call me the next day! Instead, I emailed the company again. When the phone rang the next day, I didn't answer. The company finally sent out a guy with a new hard drive to install. He had to drive from Charleston to Parkersburg, WV. It then took him something like 10 minutes to install the drive, check it and go home.

Why they couldn't have just sent another drive...I don't know what they were paying the guy in India, but it was a total waste of money, and then they added in 3 hours or so of round trip driving for the tech rep, plus an hour or so of work plus the cost of the drive.
