>Where I was raised, to say something was so many feet (or foot) square meant that it was that many feet to a side; therefore '2 ft square' meant 4 square feet, 10 foot square meant 100 square feet. Of course, to avoid any misunderstanding, one would be precise and say 'two square feet' if one were convey the meaning of an area being 288 square inches, regardless of the dimension of its sides. I suspect that the meaning derived from eliding the 'd' in 'squared', as in, "The area was 3 feet square(d)."
Anyone familiar with the usage 'Monday week' versus 'a week Monday'? As I learned it, they mean two entirely different things and might mean something different depending on the context in which they were used.
Only English has so many nuances and regional differences - especially in the US of A.
...or 288 sq in......
Basil
>2 foot square would be 2' x 2'
2 square feet would be some combination of measurements that would yield 288 sq inches. ....and if you wanted that to be a square then the sides would measure the same in inches as the square root of 288.

>It seems pretty obvious that a 2 foot square is 2 feet on each edge making it 4 square feet and it can be no other shape than square. 2 square feet would be an object covering that area (288 square inches, etc) and an infinite range of objects could be 2 square feet since nothing says that it must be square, rectangular, or any other shape. A triangele can be 2 square feet as can a circle.
2 ft square not equal 2 ft. squared
