Flip-over Table

>I want to make a square table with a hinged top that folds in half. I've seen examples in which the top flips open, swivels 90 degrees, and slides sideways so that the hinge becomes centered on the base with the 'leaves' fully supported. Unfortunately, I never took the time to look underneath to see how it's done.

Does anyone know what this style of table is called, and how it is constructed? Is it a mechanism that is commercially available, or can it be built in the shop?

TIA, Garrett

>Garret, if you have a copy of Ernest Joyce's tome, the Dictionary of Furniture Making in your library, you're quids in. The mechanism is described under swivel-top tables.

Closed they are rectangular and open they are square. Most commonly they are single pedestal tables with four feet. I tend to think this style of leg set can lead to some instability when the table is open if you're not careful. Slainte.
