Don't you hate it when...

Mitch from TN (formerly from NYC)

>people say furniture is made of "cherry wood?" Just say it's made of cherry. It isn't made of cherries!!! Of course it's made of the wood of the tree. Just had to get that off my chest. Thanks and go back to what you were doing.

That's funny.

>You must be hanging out with Rod and talking about pet-peeves.

I hate it too, btw. :)

Some people need clarity....

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>I can remember finding myself, on at least two occasions in the last tens years, having a conversation something like this:

Me: "... then I made the little caboose out of walnut."

Them: "Wow, Walnut Wood?"

Me: "Yes, Walnut wood..... the shells are too small and brittle." (no, I wasn't THAT sarcastic... I didn't mention the shells.... just thought about saying it

I've mentioned making things out of cherry, walnut and maple, and have had people ask if I mean the wood, I guess as opposed to the fruit, the nut, the shell, the bark, the leaves, whatever. Perhaps it's because people know that we make crafts and things too and they think we might have used something other than the wood.

Do that word association game with alot of people, where you say a word and they say the first word that comes to mind, and maple, cherry and walnut will likely be followed by: syrup, leaf, strawberry, almond.... and some people that will just respond: ice cream, ice cream, ice cream to each of them.

Re: Don't you hate " A Cherry Finish!"?

>Good Afternoon Mitch,

One of my pet peeves is the way manufacturers and retailers fool the public by letting them confuse the color and tone with the specie of wood used. Its a pity that even most of the sales people don't have a clue.

Re: Don't you hate - the cheap wood rec

>Relatives are the worst: Just make it out of some cheap wood.

I have yet to find that cheap wood source.

So none of their projects have even gotten started.

>King Wood, African Black Wood, Basswood, Olive Wood, Canarywood, Leopardwood, Lacewood, Rosewood, Cottonwood, Zebrawood, Satinwood, Bloodwood.

Do we say Bloodwood wood? Cottonwood wood? Zebrawood wood?

Exactly.

Jason Roehl in Mulberry, IN

>Especially because what usually passes for a "cherry" finish is some deep, dark almost-purply red. I'm typing this on a laptop that sits on a 10-year old coffee table made of clear-finished cherry (wood). The color is a nice caramel-like brown, with a hint of orange perhaps, nowhere near that overly dark stuff in the stores (that's usually stained maple anyway).

We know what a real cherry finish is....

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>A couple of summer's ago we (my kids and I) were making some toys out of scaps of wood in the workshop. We decided to color them using fresh blueberries and cherries..... squished them up and make a natural "stain" of red, blue and purple colors. The kids loved it.
