Placement of hinges on cabinet doors

>I was wondering if anyone knows of some convention to determine how far cabinet door hinges are placed from the top and bottom of the door. Is there some "golden ratio" to go by or should I just put them where they look good?

>You might try measuring your kitchen cabinets and going from there.

>I did look at my cabinets and got mixed results. Some of the larger doors were different in size by several inches but the hinges were the same distance from the edge. Some of the smaller doors were almost the same size but the hinge placement varied by an inch between them. I found the hinges to be anywhere from 1 inch on the smaller doors to 3 1/2 inches on the larger doors. I do have locally "custom made" cabinets so it may not reflect standard "box store" cabinets.

>In "The Encyclopedia of Furniture Making-Ernest Joyce" it states "No precise rules can be laid down and appearances must be studied." He goes on to recommend in general;light doors(1'6")-2" from the edge,medium(2'9")-2 1/2",and larger(5'6")-3".He adds."..with an additional centre hinge or hinges equally spaced if the door is heavy or bowed in the length." also--"...framed doors are often hinged to line up with the inner edges of the rails."

This is an excellent book which I recommend as a resource for all woodworkers.---Jack

>What that tells you is that there is no hard and fast rule. When I was teaching wood working, we placed them so the top of the hinge lined up with the bottom edge of the top rail and the bottom of the bottom hinge lined up with the top edge of the lower rail. Works for frame and panel doors. Tall doors had a third hinge in the middle.

The short answer would be, whatever looks good.

I almost always line them up with the rails...

>Like mentioned in Jack's post. There are exceptions when the door is large, it looks a bit better to move them in a bit further. I've found people rarely notice the hinges much though.
