Frame and Panel Drawer Fronts & Cabinet Side

>OK - My wife saw a vanity in Lowes that has both frame and panel doors and drawer fronts.

I typical build frame and panel doors using 3/4" stock with a 1/4" plywood panel set between the stiles and rails.

I can see building a drawer front in the same manner as a door but on a drawer front, there would be a 1/4" gap between the plywood panel and the front of the drawer. Attaching the pull could be a problem.

I was thinking of just simply gluing a spacer of the needed thickness to the plywood panel. Is there a better way to build the front?

Also, the left side of the vanity is open to the bathroom. I was planning on building the modular cabinets from panolam with cherry edge banding, and then gluing a 1/4" cherry plywood panel to the left side and then gluing some 1/4" thick rails and stiles to simulate the raised panel theme.

That way, the inner portion of the cabinet (sink base) would have the simulated wood look of the panolam and the left side would be cherry. The outer stile would have a rabbet to cover the exposed edge of the 1/4" plywood "veneer". Again, is there a better way to do this?

>Regarding the plywood panel in the doors and drawer fronts:

Norm is doing a built-in dinette set on TOH, with a similar plan. For his ply panels, he's using 1/2" plywood panels, with the back edges rabbet routed to leave a 1/4" tongue to insert into the rail & stile portions.

For you, this approach would leave you no need to shim out the drawer face to approximate thickness. Or so it seems to me. HTH.

>If you make the panel out of solid wood you can make it flush with the back edge of the frame.

>That's how we do it on our cabinets at Habitat, 1/2 inch ply with 1/4 inch rabbited tongues...the doors are much more solid sounding that way.
