>Can anyone comment on the proper half staff flag timeframe for a presidents death?

Everywhere around here the flags are still half staff, while I put mine back up to the top awhile back.

Re: It varies, but more importantly... *LINK*

>I believe it is by executive order to be 30 days for the death of a president. Death of a VP is 10 days, and others are also 10 days or 1 day.

But as importantly, here's how you fly a flag at half staff:

When raising the flag to half staff in the morning:

1. Raise the flag briskly to full staff

2. Then immediately lower it ceremoniously to half staff

When ratiring the flag at the end of the day:

1. Raise it to full staff briskly

2. Lower it ceremoniously and remove the flag

3. Some disagree on this additional raising at the end of the day, but it is considered best to err on the side of respect by raising it to full staff before retiring the colors

On Memorial day, the flag is flown at half staff only until noon, when it is raised to full staff.

I'm no expert on the subject, but the above I'm pretty sure about. I invite others more knowledgable to add or refute my statements...

Another of my seemingly endless pet peeves…

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>…is violations of the flag code (virtually 100% of the time due to plain ignorance). I wound up in a huge dust-up at our condo (I was president at the time) over this following 9-11. Police were even involved.

The thing I see violated most often is flying the flag after dark. It can be done, but it's supposed to be lit.

>I agree with you Rod. I think almost all of the violations are from ignorance and I blame the civic leaders of this country. (I'm not trying to get political, I blame them all, regardless of party). Unless you were in Boy Scouts or have actually sought out information, I'd guess that a person has very little knowledge of the proper uses of a flag.

For example: There are lots of business in my town that are very "patriotic" because that fly HUGE flags. Now that the flags are at half mast, this poses a problem. The flag is too long and would drag on the ground, so they only lower it to about 3/4. WRONG ANSWER! It needs to come down and be put away for the 30 days. There is a rulebook out there somewhere that designates things like the ratio of the flag to the flagpole.

Interesting fact: Does anyone know the proper way to dispose of a flag?

Burn it. Yes, burn it. There are two ways. One is to fold it and burn it cerimoniously and the other is to tear it into strips and burn them, also cerimoniously.

So if there were a ban on burning the flag, technically, we couldn't ever get rid of any of our flags.

MeToo!!

Ken Oakley-Sunny St. Cloud, Fla.

>I live on a cul de sac and one of the houses on the circle my house is on lives the Village Idiot and his wife, Wanda Witch. He has stickers all over his vehicles proclaiming he is a veteran of this unit and that unit yet flies his flag 24/7, unlit at night. He didn't lower the flag honoring President Ford and I doubt if he will. The last flag he had was so tattered and shredded I finally had a verbal confrontation with him, namely screaming vile words back and forth. He took it down and replaced it with a new one. Guess where the old one wound up-- Yep!!- in the trash can. A real red blooded American hero. And yes I am a proud veteran of the Korean war having served with the 40th Infantry Division in Korea.

>Burning is not required, just preferable. The disposal must be in a dignified manner. Meaning don't throw it on the grill when you are done cooking the burgers, but taking it out back, digging a small hole, and burning it is perfectly OK.

That's what we do with our Boy Scout Troop. We take pride in properly retiring the flag on camp outs. We tear them into strips and burn each strip.

Usually the Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader will create the strips and the scouts walk in a line quietly past them getting a strip, then putting it in the fire. It's done in silence after the Scout Master talked about an historical event. It's usually taken very seriously by everybody.

As usual, you are right....

>Rod, as usual you are right. Twice this time.

You are right about your views, and you are right that your list of pet peeves is endless ;)

You need to lighten up a little, someone (like me for instance) can live happily with only about 90% of the pet peeves you have ;) ;) ;)

Happy Woodworking!

Near first hand experience

Pete LaBelle

>At the Ford museum in Grand Rapids, the flag, which was flying at half mast for the last 30 days, was lowered, folded up by a local Boy Scout Troop, and retired last night. A new one was to go up today in its place, fully extended. Saw this on the local news last night.
