OT- scan software

Joe Piotrowski - Chicago Burb's

>yet another OT question :)

I would like to start to thin out my Booksleves. I have many magazines I bought and subscribed to over the years. many have only a single article or plans. a few dozen have flood damage.

I would like to scan these and organize them however my current free software that came with my scanner is cumbersome and in adequate.

I would like to have the ability store these files and retrieve them with some ability to search by multiple tags.

any ideas would be great.

TIA,

Joe P.

>I am currently doing exactly the same thing. I am scanning mine to a single page to a pdf file. When I get the magazine done, I combine them all into a single pdf file using Acrobat Professional. Each magazine comes out to be about a 40 MB pdf file. It is not a very quick process. I usually do it while I'm playing online poker.

Ping me back here or by email if this doesn't make any sense.

>I don't want to scan full magazines just select articles. I would like to be able to store multiple pages in a single file. I would also like to to be able to search for the files with multiple criteria.

will adobe do this?

>I have been playing around with the setting and different file types available with my software and really only a PDF and TIff come out reasonable.

saving it to HTML option would be sweet but it doesn't do a good job of it.

since I am a programming guy, My first thought is to do it in a DB an just link to files. or KISS and just label the folder in a nice hierarchy and use a strong naming convention for finding the files via windows/Google desktop search.

something descriptive in a format like location/area/style/ name.

i.e. outdoor/ patio / Shaker / trestle table.pdf.

I am really hoping someone knows a good program. the software comes with a album feature but if I move files or get new scanner software etc. it's useless.

but for now I guess I can't go wrong with saving as PDF. it very universal and should leave me options at the end of the day.

MS access

Joe Piotrowski - Chicago Burb's

>will work. I played around with a test. I can add a hypertext filed and just link to it.

it's been a long time since I did a Access DB project 2003 has some new features I will need to check out.

I really don't want to go down the path of a custom solution if one is out there. I have a bad habit of going over board when I make up my own project scope.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Mark Goodall - ATL - tooljunkie

>I use Adobe Acrobat Pro for that sort of thing. It does an excellent job and you can create things just like you want, but it can be labor intensive.

I have clients who use various "document scaning/filing/archiving" solutions that are both hardware and software solutions. We're talkign about placing 500 sheet in an infeed and letting the system scan an catalog all of them in a matter of hours. I think they do 1000-2000 sheets a day. And that is nothing compared to the voluem that soem other clients do, but they outsource that. I could give you the names of the software systems, but they are beyond the budget of home use.

I have to imaging that there is some cheap shareware equivalent, but don't know of any off hand.

PaperPort Port 9 Office

>I use a porogram called PaperPort Pro 9 Office--and a HP 8250 scanner

which works well for me--can save in many formats-do OCR, etc, as well. Multi-feed, single feed, photos,....I did not upgrade to the newer versions because the newer ones were not highly reviewed...
