>For what it's worth - Some years ago, while working for Uncle Sam, I was involved with Thrust SSC - a group that set the new land speed record and broke the sound barrier on the ground for the first time. They were using one of the dry lake beds in northern Nevada. I was a quarter mile from the car as it broke through the barrier and felt the wind whipping at my pants legs. Never heard the boom though. They did hear it in town - about 13 miles away. From side angle pictures that we later saw, you could see the pressure waves rising from the car. They also had an ultralight waiting over the track for it and the picture he took showed a cone of darker air radiating back from the car. I haven't the faintest idea what caused that darkened effect. It wasn't dust.
