>In the front leg jointery the screws really add no strength at all to that joint. A stainless screw epoxied into the front leg intersection as some folks do gives you essentially a very small metal pin in that intersection. Since the adheasive surface area is so small you get very little added strength. Screws have very little purchase in the wood. I've got 100% confidence in that intersection without screws.
I've actually done a rocker drop test from nearly 4 ft off the ground on an angle (worst possible angle I could come up with) and the only part that failed in the chair was the grain in the seat. The grain in the seat split slightly, but all intersections survived the drop with no damage.
If any of you are intersted in maloof style woodworking I'd encourage you to join my woodworking school forum at http://www.jsrwoodworking.com/forum/YaBB.pl I give lots of info and plan on using it as a tool to aid my students and any other potential students out there in the maloof style of chair making.
Thanks,
John
