18ga Nailer/Stapler Help

Domenico Russo

>Hello,

I have a situation which requires the use of 5/8" nails to fix 1/2" mdf glued to 1/4" plywood. My 16ga finish nailer can shoot a minimum of 3/4" nails, so I was looking at 18ga nailers, which shoot nails down to 1/2". I'm looking for a reasonably well made unit with the possibility of it being a nailer stapler combo. Bostich has a cool magnesium unit that I was looking at in particular. If anyone has any advice on what to buy and if anyone knows of a good 2-in-1 unit, I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Dom Russo

>Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that often 2-in-1 stapler/nailer combos are not that good if you do a lot of nailing instead of just stapling.

My esperiences with these combos is that it will leave a large staple mark when you are nailing in because you want to drive the nail beneath the wood surface. And since the driver head has got to accomodate for the larger stapler crown, so, you will see a flat lined hole instead of a dimple.

This means that you have to fill a larger nail hole (or I should say stapler hole?) if you want to cover the nail hole. May not be pretty for the project unless it is in a hidden area.

But if you're buying it more for stapling than nailing, it may be worth the price.

Just my 2 cents worth.
