Making a Pipe

Ryan Dicker in Renfrew, Ontario

>I was reading over Georges thread on pipes and remembered a discussion I had with my grandfather about making a pipe. I was just curious if anyone has previously made one or knows of some plans for one. I don't smoke myself, but I think it could be a fun project and would make a great gift.

Thanks,

Ryan

I Made One

>Good Afternoon Ryan,

Maybe I should say I attempted to make one. It didn't finish out too well, but it IS functional. I bought a kit from a New York outfit called "Wally Frank" which sold pipes and tobacco. All you got was a stem fitted to a block of briar. You supplied the skill to shape and sand. I saw one on ebay last week. Brian is a difficult wood to work with. Mine would doubtless be better if I had taken the time to do it right. Still, it is the one I take along when I go fishing. Maybe some day I'll try it again.

>Strangely enough, last week some magazines I'd bought on eBay arrived: Profitable Hobbies, from the '50s. The issue of January 1955 has an article called Riding The Trend Toward Pipes.

If you're interested, email me at charliediy at aol dot com and I'll be glad to copy it and send it along. It's actually a pretty decent piece on the basics of pipe making.
