WHO Smokes A Pipe Besides Me?

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Afternoon Friends,

I've been smoking a pipe since I was 14 years old, and still average three or four bowls a week. Over the last 52 years I've collected over a hundred pipes, and probably have broken and lost half that many. I'm curious if other woodworkers enjoy a good pipe now and then.

>I smoked a pipe for at least 30 years until one winter when I had a chest cold and had to stop for breath half way up the basement stairs.

I threw the pipes in a drawer and dumped my remaining tobacco in the trash and never lit up again. It is over 25 years now but the damage had been done. I now have COPD and last test only had 25% of my lung capacity left. So now I huff and puff with the least little exertion.

I also drank heavily for years but stopped that 15 years ago and so far my liver hasn't exploded. I won't tell you about my escapades with the ladies because most of it would be fantasies.

Not me but...

Jerry Nicholson

>my dad was a long time pipe smoker. That resulting in the need to cut out about half his tongue when he was 75. He recovered from that operation without complications and his speech wasn't too badly affected except when he got tired. He was going strong at age 84 until his heart suddenly quit pumping one night.

Yes - Many Years Ago!

>Howdy Colonel!

If I could do just 3 or 4 bowls a week, I'd still be doing it, too. My problem is that I have an over-achiever, easily addicted personality. (Yeah, that's what it is! Couldn't be a character flaw.) I had maybe 10 different pipes I smoked. I'd use one for a day or two then let it rest. Used to have a tobacconer who mixed my personal blend which I bought a pound at a time. Only a bakery smells better, to me, than a tobacco shop.

It's been 30 years now since I last lit match to tobacco, but the lungs are, no doubt, much the worse for not having done it sooner. Found out a few years back that I'm highly allergic to tobacco smoke. No wonder I had trouble breathing.

>George, I don't smoke the pipe anymore but I did for 25-30 years. I got where I was smoking way too much. I tried to quit it for several years and finally quit cold turkey one night. If I could smoke only a couple of bowls per week I would do it again but I don't think that I could do that. I still love the smell of pipe tobacco and enjoy second hand pipe smoking whenever I can.

Well Howard,

>You are welcome in my shop. I'll smoke the pipe and you drink the beer. Sounds like a plan.

Back before WWII when

Don Henthorn

>I was managing a parts department for a Chevy dealer, I had something burning all the time. I smoked a half tin of pipe tobacco, several cigars and a package of cigarettes every day. I smoked those cigars so short you couldn't tell if it was my cigar burning or my chewing tobacco on fire. I worked long hours by choice because I didn't do women, not that I didn't want to, but I was too timid to ask one for a date. So I had lots of time to work and smoke. After the war I had a family and didn't want my kids to smoke so I just quit. Now my son doesn't smoke ut ,y daughter does. Go figure. Don't know what happened to my pipes.

>George, sounds good to me. I would love to visit your shop someday. Back in my working days it would have relatively easy to arrange. Now that I am retired with limited income travel doesn't happen very much. But maybe someday I will get the chance to visit and meet you.

>I put my bong away 20 years ago don't miss it at all I don't drink much any more either. I still chase my lovely wife and even cuss when I hit my thumb with a hammer. I'm glad you still enjoy your pipe but it is time to pack it away Them Grand babies will want you around to make them goodies for along time. Time to move on my good friend

>Good morning George,

I have to admit I am one of the dwindling pipe smokers left in America. It is only one of the many bad habits I have.

I am a woodturner who has never tried to turn a pipe. I guess Dr. Grabow is still cheaper than Briar burl. I gave up the cigarettes many years ago. But I guess I still need the pleasure of a nice cold beer and a smoke at the end of the day.

Best wishes,

Dave

Used to. Not anymore.

>I grew up in a smoking family and worked for several summers at the tobacco counter of my dad's drug store. So, I had lots of access to pipes, tobacco, cigars, cigarettes and all the accessories, and I tried them all. (Cigarettes were 30¢ a pack back then.) I enjoyed pipe smoking the best, but I eventually got hooked on cigarettes and smoked the pipe less and less.

Now I've quit all of it, but I do cave in for a good cigar now and then if it walks in the door. To me, there's still nothing better than to hang out in the shop on a winter evening, with a buddy or two, a good cigar, a hot woodstove, a cold beer, some relaxing music on the boom box, maybe a game of darts.... I know where you're coming from, Colonel. Thanks for the moment of reverie.

Oh man! Can I come over?! That just sounds too good especially sitting here at work... :(

George, for what it's worth, I agree with Ernie's last couple of sentences.

If I started smoking a pipe now, my wife would leave me.

Joe

P.S.

Think I'll go buy a pipe... :)

I prefer...

Jason Roehl in Mulberry, IN

>...a good bourbon with the rare cigar (about 1/year now) I smoke. But I'll take a beer in a pinch. Best cigar I ever had was a Honduran of some sort that my RA's Navy buddy brought back. I didn't even know a thing about cigars then (don't know much now), but I remember how smooth and flavorful it was. I've never tried a pipe, but I sure like the smell of Captain Black (heavy on the vanilla) when someone else is smoking it.
