WC Weekend Accomplishments....

Dennis E. Peacock

>Good Morning Everyone,

Another weekend has come and gone and I'm ashamed to say that I haven't seen the inside of my shop for almost 3 weeks now due to my day job and all the new work we have coming in. I haven't been on the internet with any regularity for well over 2 weeks now. Too bad I'm not getting paid by the hour. :-(

Work on Friday, Friday night, and into Saturday morning late. Sleep some during the day on Saturday, church and bass playing on Sunday morning, rest Sunday afternoon, family time Sunday evening, and now it's back to to day job.

I sure miss my shop time.

What did YOU do this weekend?

Best of weeks to you all.

Dennis

Here's what happens with a short attention span

Ken Krawford

>While waiting for some glue ups to dry, I began poking around my wood rack. I found a couple of hard maple legs that I screwed up when making an entertainment center many years ago. One thing led to another and a child's chair was born. A chair is no good without a table, so a little more poking around the lumber rack and the table takes shape. My grandaughter should be over in a couple of hours to give it a test drive.

Another Mission....

George@Colonel's Workshop-Havertown PA

>Good Morning Dennis and a happy Monday,

I've stumbled around pecking at things to do while searching the right style furniture to base our new Master Bedroom Suite on. I found it surfing the Thomasville web site. They have a "Felicity"

line which my wife and I really like, and we decided to develop drawings and produce modified versions in cherry for ourselves. Having made that decision, I am charged with enthusiasm and energy. Plan to make the end/night tables first, and then the chest on chest. this is going to take all winter and much of the spring and summer to produce the four poster bed, bureau, wall mirror, chest, two night stands, and bookcase. I'll begin today and surface some of the cherry in preparation. Looking forward gives me as much of a thrill as looking at the completed items. We had our family party last night and discussed wedding plans for #6 son. Have a great week, and get back into your shop soon, Dennis.

>Beautiful work Ken. I am sure your granddaughter will cherish the chair, the table, and her grandfather!

First reasonable weather day here in a while so it was off to the dog park for the morning exercise.

>A while ago I picked up a used Walker Turner lathe that dates back to the 1940's. This weekend I finally finished the process of disassembling the headstock, cleaning out the old grease and gunk, relubing the parts, and reassembling it. It runs much more smoothly than it did when I first bought it. No more high pitched squealing sounds!

Cab Work - Spraying & Delivery

Mike Fitterling

>Got the final spraying done on 23 of the walnut/maple cabinets. The walnut banding got a coat of garnet shellac, then everything got two coats of gloss lacquer, followed by a coat of satin lacquer. Got these 23 on the truck and their way to their new home late Saturday afternoon. Walnut doors also got a coat on one side of garnet shellac, but the weather is turning on me here and more spraying on the doors/drawer fronts will have to wait for the next break (two coats garnet, then same schedule of lacquer). These boxes are for the 10' high by 13' long wall and 10' long peninsula. Still have seven cabinets to go for the island. While there is a chance of rain this week I will be finishing up those doors.

>Victor,

You may be right about the legs. They're 1 1/2" hard maple screwed to the apron. When I made them I thought they would be fine but after assembling the table, I thought they looked a bit spindly. Time will tell.

Re: Work avoidance

>I was avoiding (again!) two major projects that are supposedly in progress in my shop. This time I built a spill plane. This is one of those oddball tools, where the shavings are the whole point. The stock you are "planing" is just scrap, and gets used up in the process of making spills. These were used in the days before matches were widely available, to light candles, lamps, pipes, cigars, &cetera. Most kitchens would have had a box or jar full of spills.
