Storage door construction ideas?

Alan Tolchinsky

>HI All, I just built a storage/bench that's 8 feet long by 33" tall. It's all made of 3/4" B/C plywood. Now I want to add doors to this to conceal all the stuff in it. It will have a face frame mostly because I want to make one. What kind of doors would you make? I was thinking of 1/8" masonite with a 1x3 wood frame around it simply glued on . What do you think? Thanks for any ideas. Alan

Me too ...

>I did the same thing as you Alan but I used 1/4" hardboard for the panels. I also splined the corners of the mitered doors for extra strength. Regards.

Do something that you need practice on

Rob Sandow

>When I build shop cabinets, I usually build them out of cheaper materials but try to use methods that are suited to furniture or finished cabinet construction. In this case, you can't go wrong by building some frame and panel doors using M&T or cope and stick, using pine or plywood for the rails and stiles and masonite for the panels.

>I have to admit, for stuff like this I go Cheap and Easy: cut a 3/4" plywood (or melamine) panel to size, iron on some edge-banding, drill for hinges, and install a knob. Much easier and far less time than building a "real" frame and panel door...

>Thanks all for the ideas. Unfortunately I don't have many tools here so I can't do many machining operations. I'll have to stick with the 3/4" ply doors or the fake masonite with wood frames type. Thanks for your suggestions.
