glider bearings

>I've recently seen factory made gliders with smooth running bearings that appear to be just roller bearings and a nut to hold them together. I cannot however see what is used between the two pieces of wood the bearings are mounted in. Does anyone know how these are put together? I know that you can buy bearings made for the purpose of making gliders but they are not as rugged as these look and certainly couldn't be any smoother running. I'm also wondering if the cost would be less to make them myself as well as being a more rugged design!
