>Hi guys/and Gals new to the site looks great, I have a few Questions not sure if they have been asked or not but hopefuly you can help me out. I have around 3000 LF of 1/4 cut milled Red and White oak, I wanted to get some furnitre made with it but am in a bit of a jam, Ive been looking for a carpenter willing to do this and aslo I was told that I would have to get this wood Kiln dryed, mind you this wood has been in storage for 15 years, but have been told thats not good enough, What I needed to know is if you had any good and willing carpenter in southern Ontario thats wants to make this furniture for me and if needed were would I have to get this wood Kiln dryed? Thanks in advance.Paul

>There are some variables, however, after 15 years of storage I would be surprised if the wood needed further drying. If I were you I would invest in a moisture meter and test it. That would be a small investment.

In my humble opinion

>you have been sold a bunch of bull. If the wood has been air dried for fifteen years it is ready for a competent cabinet maker (not a carpenter, mind you) to use. If it needs further drying to use in a special way, he will know how to get it done without a kiln. Your main job is find a competent cabinet maker and I suspect there are some right here on this forum who might be interested in the job.

>Well that's a pretty big area can you narrow it down some (ie closest big city) and I'll give you a few names. Doubtfull if your wood has been stored in a barn type structure it needs any more drying.

>Just for clarification, I think some furniture makers would be insulted to be called carpenters unless they also double as one in another occupation.

Having said that I'd find it hard to believe that Oak sitting around air drying for 15 years would not be ready to use given a few weeks acclimating in a conditioned shop.

One other thing to consider, what may appear to be good material to you may not necessarily be good nmaterial to a skilled cabinet maker or furniture builder.

O understand your point, Ted, but having worked

>ends, sure some cabinet makers would not want to be called carpenters because they are cabinet makers. On the other hand I have known some real carpenters, of which there are very few today, who would not like being called cabinet makers. A skilled carpenter of 75 years ago had skills that would astound even some of hand tool experts of today, and the head knowledge that they had would challenge any cabinet maker. I respect them both. But one can't compare apples to oranges as some are want to do. I know you aren't, but I just wanted to clear that up for those who might misinterpret it.
