MDF Dust Question

J. Robison

>I probably already know the answer to this but......

If your dust collector contained only wood dust and chips, you could throw it on a compost pile to have it decompose, right??

I'm assuming the same can't be done with MDF dust due to its chemical content and for the same reason that you don't want it in your lungs, right??

-Nat in Michigan who just got done milling a lot of MDF wainscoting

>The glue is the evil component of MDF.

Definitely not a good idea to have those fumes nearby.

Personally, I wouldn't have any problem putting

>with modest amounts in a compost pile. The organisms that cause the decompostion are amazingly effective at what they do and any poisons in the mix will in time be broken up into other chemical forms Not a chemist, and I am not married to one, but I have talked to a lot of compost specialists who aren't too worried about it.

I agree with Don

>I see no valid reason why MDF dust can not go into a compost pile. The resins used in it are cured and inert, and for the life of me I can not see how they would affect compost negatively, though I doubt they will break down as fast as straight vegetable matter.
