OT: Windows XP Network ?

Robert Hutchins

>Could someone please point me to a good site or other source for setting up a home network. Years ago, when we had 2 computers on Win95 I bought a 4-port router and cabled them up to share printers and files. I then got in a situation where one was Win95/ME and the other was XP-HE and dropped the network. I now have one XP-Pro and the other is XP-HE which should be far more compatible.

We have a wireless router now with 2 systems sharing the ISP connection. I'd like to set it up so that I can read and write files on either one from the other one and share the printers. One has a small b&w laser and the other has an HP300 P/S/C. I'd also like to define the network so that our daughter can print to either printer when she is here with her laptop. She can already access the router and ISP; so I don't think I'll have to do anything with the router.

I tried to step thru the process in the OS but got confused which gave me cold feet. I don't want to spend the next week trying to reconfigure systems while HL goes into "Why'd you fool with it?" mode. I'd really like to understand the process and the variables better instead of just following a wizard.

TIA

>I think its as easy as clicking on "My Computer" on the desktop, right mouse click on c drive, open "Sharing and Security", and there you can change the security option for the drive in question. I am networking to computers. each with XP andtht is all I had to do. You may need to reboot.

>You can just do a individual directory/folder if you don't want to share all your files. I think for the printer you go to the printers propeties and click the Sharing tab, Don't know for sure if you can do it for any PC on the network. Also the PC that has the printer attached needs to be on, I think. I'm far from a Network guru, just a hacker.

>Make sure you go to Control Panel, Network Connection, Properties and ensure the File and Print Sharing box is ticked.

Make sure the PC with the printer attached is on and on your remote computer go to Start Printer and Faxes and on the Tasks screen in the window that comes up click on Add Printer. You will want to add a network printer. The available ones should come up and you just follow the wizard. This will also download the needed drivers to your remote PC.

I am basing this on a PC that has had the WIndows interfaced switched to classical and back and god knows where so the commands listed above may not be exactly as I typed but you get the idea.
